If I win the $72 mil jackpot from tonight's Mark Six, I'm going to buy the copyright of the Happy Birthday song, gather Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Elton John, Madonna and the gang, and record a collectible version album for global distribution.
The reason: not once have I heard the song sung well, or in the same key and beat for that matter (it doesn't count when you sing it to yourself). While one person thinks middle C is the way to go, some Mariah Carey wannabe across the table will shudder glass windows by going at half an octave higher. Not to mention the numerous versions of the third line.
The number of times we've heard or sung and will hear or sing the Happy Birthday song is astronomical. It's about time we all agree on the most suitable key for the song. I imagine Elton would be more than happy to make that decision.
September 12 was the 48th birthday anniversary of the late Leslie Cheung. Fans gathered at the peak outside Madame Tussaud's wax museum where a glossy Leslie lookalike stands. More than once, the hundreds of fans sang for their star the universal birthday celebration song, each on his/her own preferred key. Leslie, the musician that he was, must've have turned in his grave.
